Travel in Norway
This country situated in Northern Europe in Scandinavian Peninsula among the Atlantic Ocean (North Sea), the Arctic Ocean, Russian Federation, Finland and Sweden, is also called Kingdom of Norway. The country is crossed by the Scandinavian Alps (maximum altitude 2469 m) that loss high to the west and forms steep shores indented by fjords. On the littoral the plain occupies little areas. The mountains are covered at higher altitude by glaciers and persistent snows and by coniferous forests, at lower altitudes. In Norway mountains there are many lakes one of them, Femunden, being the deepest in Europe. Due to the Gulf Stream Norway has warmer climate comparing with other countries situated at the same latitude, with cool summers and mild winters. In Oslo, the capital, the average temperature registered in January is of 5ºC and in June of 28ºC. Main cities of Norway Oslo is the capital and the biggest city of Norway. Other important cities are: Bergen, Drammen, Kristiansand, Stavanger and Trondheim. They are much lower comparing with other European cities. They have few commercial high buildings and the life rhythm of other European industrial cities is missing here. The main sights of Norway consist in open air exhibitions, parks, museums all speaking about North life and culture. The most important are in the capital – Oslo. - Norwey Folkloric Museum (Norsk Folkemuseum) in Oslo – a large open-air museum with buildings from different periods of Norway history. - Akershus Castle in Oslo – a middle age castle built in 1299 situated in city centre. The stone walls create an exciting atmosphere. People can walk on the corridors and visit two museums having the theme of military history of Norway. - Norway Parliament (Stortinget) in Oslo – situated on Main Street, Karl Johans gate, can be visited in free guided tours. - Vichinge Boats Museum (Vikingskiphus) in Oslo – in this museum people can admire two 900 years old Viking boats and other Viking artefacts and a funerary room. - Holmenkollen in Oslo – a ski trampoline opened in 1892, situated in Western side of the city. Since 1892 it was rebuilt many times. From its top visitors have a panoramic view on the city and they can visit here the oldest ski museum of the world opened in 1923. - the sculptures park Vigeland in Oslo – a great green area 10 minutes far from the city centre, by subway. This is a wonderful recreation area decorated with hundreds of sculptures of Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland. The atmosphere is relaxed and no one will stop the children to climb on the statues if they want to do so. - Munch Museum in Oslo – is the place where the art lovers can admire the works of Norwegian painter Edward Munch. The other country areas come with their touristic offer to fulfil the capital’s one. - Munkholmen in Trondheim – an old island fortress, accessible by boat. - Mack Beer Factory in Tromso - Romsdal Museum in Molde – a large biggest folkloric museum founded in 1912. - Art Museum (Bergen kunstmusem) - Skjernoy Island in Mandal –a island with wonderful landscapes and welcoming people. - Borrevannet Lake in Horten – home of 255 different birds’ species. - Geiranger Geological Park - Ravnedalen in Kristiansand – a park perfect for picnics, where take place music concerts during the summer. - The Old Bergen (Gamle Bergen) in Bergen – place where can be seen over 50 wooden houses dating from XVIII, XIX centuries and beginning of XX century. - Tromso Museum in Tromsa: a large museum with North theme. - Risor Aquarium in Risor: A salt water aquarium that includes many different fish species. - Sjosanden Beach in Mandal – is probably the most famous among the ones that surround Mandal. It lays on approximately 4km.
